Many happy returns of this day everyone.

A day to celebrate our freedom.

A day to remember our past, think about our present, and dream about our future.

Am sitting in Delhi airport with Natha and Budhia and reading your responses to Peepli Live. All of us are thrilled with the response. Most encouraging. It is amazing that a such an unusual film like this is getting so warmly received all across. A special mention here about the response of the media. The film is critical of all of us and that includes the media. However this film is getting strong support from the media. I have to say that the media is showing an amazing sense of grace and maturity. Especially since a film like this really needs, and I believe deserves, this kind of support. It is most encouraging to creative people like myself who are trying to our best to push the envelope. Thank you.

Am so happy for Anusha, Mehmood and the entire cast and crew of Peepli. And I am so happy that the support I have tried to give this fresh talent is itself getting a lot of support. Much appreciated.

Keep the responses coming.

Thank you.

Love.

a.

Back in my hotel room after a hard day full of interviews. This is a really mad trip. Two days in each city with back to back interviews.

Managed to steal time to meet a really close friend in New Jersey. Always feels really nice when I meet him.

I’m flying to Dubai next, then Mumbai, then to Melbourne where Peepli Live is being screened at the Melbourne Film Festival on the 6th of Aug.

As 13th Aug gets closer the butterflies in my stomach are really beginning to flutter around. Have lost my appetite and my sleep.

I’m really depending on you guys this time round for support. This is an especially tough one with no big stars and a film based in a rural background. For those of you living outside India please tell all your friends, neighbours, collegues, gardners etc, who may not have ever seen an Indian film before, to give this one a try. Assuming you like it of course.

Am planning a live chat on fb. The madness has begun for me.

Peepli Live promos have broken yesterday announcing the release date of 13th Aug. Now its deadlines and stress time for me.

Before I get swamped by the madness I would like to express a few things. Making an unusual and challenging film like PL is always difficult, but when it turns out the way that the team had imagined, it is truly satisfying.

In PL, Anusha has written a superb script. Layered, funny, poignant, with an amazing array of characters and situations. It is a very difficult script to shoot, and this being Anusha’s first film I was understandably nervous to begin with. But she, in her very first film, has dealt with the material with such maturity that it left me stumped. Astonishingly Anusha has never assisted anyone, nor has she been to film school. I think, in her we have a talent to look out for. As a producer I am really happy with what Anusha has made and I am most impressed by her talent. I want to especially mention here the casting of the film and the performances that Anusha has brought out from her cast. Just blew me!

This may sound like I am praising my own film, and I am, but it is more in appreciation as a producer who is very happy with the creative talent of the team. I am doing it publically because I want to publically acknowledge the work that Anusha, ably assisted by her co-director Mehmood, and her team, have done.

Nadal wins. He certainly is a champion! But being a Fedderer fan all I could think of during the glimpses that I caught of the final yesterday, was, what must Fedderer going through watching the final. ☹

Argentina, the team that I was supporting, is out of the world cup. They tried hard but on that day were outplayed by the Germans.

So, now I am supporting the Germans :-}

As promised to Amitji I am on twitter. But I have to say that, as yet, I am more comfortable on my blog. As I am writing this I feel like I am home.

Love.

a.

Here is an article I wrote for Mid Day.

---

The SSC results are about to be announced and this takes me back to my school days. I remember being petrified of exams, even more petrified of the results. The red lines on my report card were demeaning, disheartening, and most discouraging. How could I face my friends and family? Shame! Broken self-esteem.

I remember I used to have nightmares. In fact, after having put in a distance of more than 20 years between myself and my last exam, I still haven’t managed to escape the cold fear of exams and results. I still wake up with the shivers after a nightmare about going blank in front of a question paper with time running out.

I am sure there many children out there who go through similar emotions and are currently in a state of panic about the impending SSC results. Kids, don’t be afraid. Just chill. All izzz well!

Don’t look upon the SSC Boards as a milestone in your life, it’s just another stone with many miles on it! You have a long way to go and many more important exams to face. Not the school or college exams, but the exams of life. And those are the ones to be prepared for. The mark sheets to look out for are not the ones printed on some paper, but the ones on the faces of the people you love. Those are the mark sheets that matter. Bring a smile on the face of your mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, friend, and you have done well in the exam of life.

I remember that the one person who always gave me strong support and encouragement even after bad results was my father. My mom would complain and tell him that I had failed in Marathi or History or something and he would laugh it off and say “What? You failed in only 2 subjects? I always failed in at least 4!” “Don’t worry about exams,” he always said, “just have a good time in school and be honest.” Honesty was always a big one for him. It genuinely never bothered him that I had done badly. And when I look back now I realize that it was probably because of his utter and absolute belief in me, and his strong support, that I grew up with confidence in myself. Had he lost faith in me I would NEVER have been able to reach where I have in life, and achieve what I have.

Parents, there is a strong lesson here for all of us. Tomorrow the SSC results will be out. I want each of you to remember that we need to accept our children as they are. Your child might fail, or get average marks, or might miss by half a percent the result that you may desire, either way, I want you to accept him/her as he/she is. Is the mark sheet more important or is your child more important?

Do not be disappointed with one exam. Life has so much to offer. Each one of us is special. And for each one of us to do well in life we need the encouragement and support of the people who love us, especially our parents. REMEMBER THE MARK SHEET OF LIFE. And this mark sheet has only 3 subjects – love, caring and happiness. Fame, success and money are calculated on some other mark sheet, and they cannot compete with the value of love, caring and happiness. Let us, as parents, not to fail in the exam of life. Remember our face is also a mark sheet, as is the face of our beloved child. Let us see really high scores on each and every face this time!

This exam, no matter what the marks of the child, I want every parent to hug his/her child when they come home with their results. Try it, and see the power of love. See what it did to me when I came home to my father.

This exam I would like teachers and principals to click photos NOT WITH THE TOPPERS but with the students who have not done as well. Reach out not to the toppers but to the ones at the other end. Give them your encouragement and support, they need it much more.

Kids, any problems with your parents, show them TZP and 3i. You have the power to change the world no matter how much you have scored in your exams. The whole wide world is ahead of you to enjoy and contribute to in small and big ways.

By the way, did any of you know what Gandhiji scored in his Matriculation Exams (which is equivalent to our SSC boards today)?

40%.

Now do you believe me?

Met Jayaji and Amithji last night for dinner in London. He was suggesting that I join twitter. In fact he sent a tweet while we were sitting together and showed me how it works. You how what a phobia I have of gadgets and technology. But I must say he was most patient with me and most persuasive. I guess when I get back I will look at it.

The food was most amazing but more than that the conversation. Ok guys, this is exciting!

For those of you who don’t know what is happening, visit my fb page and you will be up to speed. www.facebook.com/aamirkhan.com

First things first. Let me share with you what I learnt in the last few years in the process of building a physique, losing weight etc.

3 things are most important, and in that order:

1. A healthy and balanced diet.

2. Exercise.

3. Rest.

Actually exercise and rest are equally important, but the most important is a healthy and balanced diet.

1. A balanced and healthy diet.

The average person uses/spends around 1800 to 2000 calories per day. In order to lose weight you simply need to take in LESS than you spend. So consume less than 1800 calories in 24 hrs. But the ‘less’ calories you intake needs to be divided into fat, carbohydrates, and protein, and that’s where the word BALANCE comes in. A balanced diet is generally 1/3 fat, 1/3 Carbohydrates and 1/3 protein.

The best way to get a healthy and balanced diet for your self is to visit a qualified dietician. Not the dieticians who put you onto new fad diets, like high protein diets, low carb diets, blood group diets, don’t eat carbs at night diets, Atkins diet, Santa Barbara diets, ‘have this pill’ diet, ‘eat only ‘this’ one day and ‘that’ on another day’ diet, falana diet, dhamka diet etc.

No.

You need to visit a QUALIFIED dietician who gives you the good old fashioned CALORIE COUNT DIET.

A good dietician will insist on a check up BEFORE prescribing you a diet. So blood and urine test is standard, but in certain cases a sonography and other tests could also be required depending on your health situation.

The purpose of this is that your doctor needs to check your health BEFORE he can prescribe a diet. That’s where the word HEALTHY comes in. In case you have other health issues like thyroid, diabetes, heart problems, cholesterol, high BP, or anything else, then a good doctor will, through the diet, address your health issues if any AND reduce your weight. In certain cases if you have major health issues weight loss could be a problem, but that is only in very few cases I would imagine.

Each person and his/her situation is unique so therefore you cannot just follow what I am following.

Importantly, eating less is not a healthy balanced diet.

When you simply eat less and starve yourself your body goes into what I call ‘famine mode’ and actually starts to STORE fat. So not only do you not lose weight but you also destroy your health. If you take starving to the extreme I suppose you would lose weight but you would probably begin by losing proteins (whereas you should be losing excess fat), and also you would end up looking (and in fact being) unwell and sick.

When I was following my diet I was eating every one hour AND LOSING WEIGHT. Eating frequent and correct small meals increases your metabolic rate and helps you to burn fat . eg during GHAJINI I was eating every HALF HOUR!!!

So step one - visit a qualified dietician in your locality. He/she will help you.

This entire process will take you at least a week, so I suggest you start fast. I would have a head start as I have done fresh tests and already have my diet.

The doctor I recommend in Bombay is Dr Dhurander in Santa Cruz. I will ask him for a web site which explains this in greater detail and maybe has a list of dieticians in diff parts of the country/world.

If you don’t follow an appropriate diet no matter how hard you workout you will not get the results you could/should be getting.

Water is a very important of my diet. I drink 3 to 4 liters of water a day.

What all this will cost?

My doctor charges Rs 1000/- for the first visit, and then Rs 500/- per month. And he changes your diet every one month.

2. Exercise.

This would depend on what you want to achieve.

For general fitness walking, jogging, swimming, or playing a sport, are all great exercise. So if you are not looking for anything particular then choose one.

Yoga is great too.

In case you are interested in body building, building muscle, shaping your body etc., then what worked for me is weight training.

And that is what I intend to restart.

For that, you need the right equipment and a good trainer.

So the easiest would be to join a gym and use one of the trainers there. If you cant afford that then do free hand. Pulls up, push ups, crunches etc.

One book I would strongly recommend to anyone who is training is ‘The Encyclopedia of Body Building’ by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

That says it all, so I don’t need to add anything here.

3. Rest.

The importance of rest is often underestimated. No matter how hard you train, if you don’t rest your body, it will not respond as well.

During GHAJINI, as a rule, I slept for 8 hours (at least) every night. And I did ‘shavaasan’ immediately post my bath after the training. Look up ‘shavaasan’ on the net.

So!

Are we ready?!!!

Lets make a group who decides to live healthy. Anyone who wants to join can.

Each one of us is responsible for figuring out a diet for ourselves, a workout/sport/walking schedule, and a rest schedule.

You decide what is good for you. And stick to it. And every night on fb I post how I fared that day and in response you comment on my post. That way all the comments are tagged together to my post in one space, and so it will be easier for all of us to stay together on this one topic. If one of us is finding it tough the others can encourage.

I start Monday!

To all those who are skeptical or nervous or think they cant achieve a great healthy body, or simply think the road ahead is too daunting, I have only one thing to say, “lets chase excellence success will follow”.

Guys I have bad news for London :-(

I tried like hell but my schedule in London is just not permitting my to take out the time, and I am here primarily on work. But I will definitely schedule it on one of my future trips. Please forgive me. London is definitely one of my favourite cities and I will be back soon.

Paris is on. And the ones that my manager Binky has picked will be contacted. It is of course a random selection, my only cue to her was to pick among the people I have not previously met.

I wish I could meet everyone. But this is better than nothing. And I really value the opportunity of interacting with you.

Looking forward.

Love.

I am going to be in Paris on the 2nd of May and would very much like to meet up with those of you who are interested. Will restrict the group to 5. Each one of you can bring one more person with you. If you happen to be below 18 years of age you will have to accompanied by an adult.

Please post your contact details so that I can reach you but remember that this is a public space, so only if you are comfortable with putting out that information.

My apologies for staying away for so long guys. I think I needed to be silent for some time.

I am back now.

Love.

P.S.: Just discovered you dont need to leave your contact details in your post. Your emails show up at my backend.

And I am in London on 5th.

Thank you for your support, your kind words and your prayers.

I am still in a very contemplative mood. I guess a personal loss makes us question a lot of things. It makes us question what we are doing here on Earth? What is the essence of life? What is important to us? What are our priorities?
And I am not sure that we ever get the answers.

But thank you for your patience, and thank you for allowing me the time I needed to myself.

Love.

My cell phone kept ringing middle of the night. I was too sleepy to do anything about it except curse and hit out wildly in its general direction. Woke up in the morning to see tons of texts messages. Wondered what the deal was. It wasn’t my birthday or anniversary, or Eid or Diwali or Christmas. Read the first one and felt a wave of warmth pass through me.

Padma Bhushan.

Wow!

Felt so happy, and such a sense of pride. How I wish I was back home in India. Called my mom, and my brother and sisters. But still felt a huge void of not being back in India. Don’t know how to explain it.

Want to thank my country for this honour.

Vande Mataram, ma tujhe salaam.

Want to thank all my well wishers, my fans, for their love, respect and unwavering support over all these years.

Thanks guys.

Another piece of good news is that our film Peepli Live was really well received here at the Sundance Film Festival. We had our first screening on the 24th at the Egyptian Theatre, Park City. Super reaction right through the film, and huge ovation at the end. Audience really seemed to love it. In fact you can read some of the responses on the festival site. Go to http:/festival.sundance.org/2010 , click on film guide, then search for Peepli Live

Also check out the review in Screen International online by David D'Arcy dated 25th Feb.

I was really keen to see the reaction here at Sundance as I wanted to get a sense of how a non-Indian audience reacts to the film. 90% of the audience was non-Indian. I am now even more certain that this film has the potential to engage a world audience. The big challenge, when we release the film worldwide, will be to get them in. It doesn’t have any stars, and is in a language that they don’t understand.

START THINKING GUYS, I NEED ALL THE HELP AND ADVICE I CAN GET ON THIS ONE!!!

In the meantime...

Ganatantra din Mubarak.

Love.

We are just about to leave from Ahmedabad after a very warm and loving reception here. Thank you so much folks. Such warmth and love! We are all really overwhelmed! Thank you. Our sincere thanks for such a warm welcome. And we are so happy that you have loved our film so much.

Love.

Have been going through your responses post the CB controversy. Some sincere and some insincere. The insincere ones I choose to ignore, but I am very keen to respond to those of you have had very sincere queries, questions and even assumptions. I am very keen to present my side of the story, why I said what, why I feel what I feel, and what is the difference between a book and a screenplay, what I feel about ethics of this issue, fair play, morality etc. The whole gamut. I would also like to present some very interesting evidence.

However I would not like to do this right now.

The reason is, that first of all, I think that it is very important that we distance ourselves from this incident to be unemotional about it, me included. Only then will we be able to examine the merits of the case in an unbiased and clinical manner. I am a very emotional person and find it very difficult to be clinical, so for me distance is most important.

Another reason is that I would not like any more undue publicity for or against anyone. A few responses have expressed that maybe this is a controversy that we have cooked up to get publicity for the film. This stance of mine should satisfy them too.

The facts are before us in any case, and examining them now or after a few weeks should yield the same results.

A few of you have expressed extremely strong negative views about me, some may be insincere, but a few may be sincere too. I would like to give value to that. And hence I will try my best to satisfy you, or alternately, learn from you.

Some of you have expressed doubts about my actions, raised questions. I would like to give value to that. Hence I will try my best to answer all your queries and address all your doubts. I hope to satisfy you, or learn from your questions.

A lot of you have stood by me in full support. I thank you for trusting me. And you can be sure that I will not let you down. xox

In the mean time I have some very shocking news!!!

Don’t worry the news is good. But it is shocking nevertheless.

Last year GHAJINI had broken all records and had gone on to become the biggest grosser in the history of Indian Cinema. No film since has even come close to the business. In fact very few films even before GHAJINI are close, just a handful. Examples Gaddar, Hum Aapke Kaun, DDLJ, Raja Hindustani.

Now hold your breath, and take a seat.

3i has already crossed the business of GHAJINI even as you read this post!!!

In less than 10 days 3i has overtaken the ENTIRE business of GHAJINI!!!

India, Overseas, everywhere!!!

And is still going strong...

I have no idea how to describe what is happening. Some suggestions and explanations, PLEASE.

I cannot tell you how happy the entire team is. I am not a numbers person, numbers don’t mean anything to me except that they act as a yard stick to tell me how much the film has been seen and loved. We are so thrilled that all the love, effort and passion that we have put into making this film has been received with as much love and passion by all of you.

Fully overwhelmed and totally humbled. Just feel like holding this moment for ever.

Thank you.

Love.

x

Just landed in Kolkata after a super time in Bangalore.

The 3i team is travelling to a number of cities to interact with audiences across the country. Bangalore was the first stop and we had such a lovely time there. The entire team joins me in thanking Bangalore, and all of you who were there at the mall, to give us so much love and affection. It was really overwhelming. Thank you.

The sad note in our happiness was the untimely demise the next day of super star Vishnuvardhan. Mr Vishnuvardhan who is a huge star in Karnataka and has had a prolific career was only 59. Our condolences to his family, to all those who love him, and to all of Karnatka for whom he is such an icon. May his soul rest in peace.

We have now reached Kolkatta and we are all looking forward to meeting our audience here. Kolkata has always been a place I have loved and I am very happy to be back.

One word of caution to all those who come to meet and see us at the venue, please be careful not to hurt yourselves. I always worry that some kid will get trampled in the chaos. There are ladies, girls, kids and elderly people in the crowd, and I would not ever like it to become a mob situation or a stampede where someone gets hurt. I know that everyone gets excited and we love that, but in all the excitement I don’t want anyone to get hurt. Please be rest assured that we have come to see you, and are there for you, and please be relaxed about it.

Today of course is the last day of the year, it’s been a very good year for me and I am very grateful for that. I want to thank each and every one of you for the wonderful things that you have said about the film. Raju, Vinod and the entire team have been reading my blog and are very moved, and join me in thanking you. My sincere good wishes to all of us for a great new year ahead. Have a blast.

Lots of love.

x

 So?

What did y'all think?

Varanasi was truly enriching. And such wonderful people. So warm and helpful to a ‘complete stranger’. Each and everyone of them went out of their way to help a very ‘strange looking elderly man’. I made 5 new friends there. Ram Lakhan, Nawab Sahab, Lallan Miyan, Hasan and Javed.

My mother is from Varanasi hence the ref in my first clue ‘maa ke aangan mein raat bitaoon’. Most people thought I would turn up in Pune where my mother currently lives. But of course I am more cryptic than that. Warning. This is not some corny, easy to guess, filmy quiz where we just want to collect scores of winners. This is a genuinely tough contest and I don’t plan to make it easy. Well there are a few really easy ones as well. In fact, quite honestly, the Varanasi clue I consider fairly easy. Anyone who bothered to find out about my mother would have guessed.

When I set off to search for the house that my mother lived in I never thought I would actually find it. I had a very sketchy address and my mother’s memory of the place when she was 10 years old. And of course some very determined helpers.

I am most indebted to the the 5 of them. And as you guys may have noticed I presented them with a specially designed ring which is a symbol of my friendship. On this trip whenever I meet someone who I connect with I will offer him my ring. Which, by the way, also automatically gives him/her entry to the premier on the 23rd.

Have always been a big fan of Phantom, the ghost who walks. :-)

I have to say that I was very nervous at first. Would my disguise work? There was no way to tell until I walked onto the streets. Super exciting and great fun. Its been so long since I have not been stared at wherever I go. I could actually walk among people and no one gave me a second glance.

Well I am underground again. And will emerge next in the dark of the night.

Andheri kaali raat mein aaoonga main
khooni darwaza khatkhataoonga main
aap mujhe tak pahonch na paye to kya hua
kahin par apni chap chod jaoonga main.

Catch me if you can :-)

www.idiotsacademy.com
