Thank you for your support, your kind words and your prayers.

I am still in a very contemplative mood. I guess a personal loss makes us question a lot of things. It makes us question what we are doing here on Earth? What is the essence of life? What is important to us? What are our priorities?
And I am not sure that we ever get the answers.

But thank you for your patience, and thank you for allowing me the time I needed to myself.

Love.

My cell phone kept ringing middle of the night. I was too sleepy to do anything about it except curse and hit out wildly in its general direction. Woke up in the morning to see tons of texts messages. Wondered what the deal was. It wasn’t my birthday or anniversary, or Eid or Diwali or Christmas. Read the first one and felt a wave of warmth pass through me.

Padma Bhushan.

Wow!

Felt so happy, and such a sense of pride. How I wish I was back home in India. Called my mom, and my brother and sisters. But still felt a huge void of not being back in India. Don’t know how to explain it.

Want to thank my country for this honour.

Vande Mataram, ma tujhe salaam.

Want to thank all my well wishers, my fans, for their love, respect and unwavering support over all these years.

Thanks guys.

Another piece of good news is that our film Peepli Live was really well received here at the Sundance Film Festival. We had our first screening on the 24th at the Egyptian Theatre, Park City. Super reaction right through the film, and huge ovation at the end. Audience really seemed to love it. In fact you can read some of the responses on the festival site. Go to http:/festival.sundance.org/2010 , click on film guide, then search for Peepli Live

Also check out the review in Screen International online by David D'Arcy dated 25th Feb.

I was really keen to see the reaction here at Sundance as I wanted to get a sense of how a non-Indian audience reacts to the film. 90% of the audience was non-Indian. I am now even more certain that this film has the potential to engage a world audience. The big challenge, when we release the film worldwide, will be to get them in. It doesn’t have any stars, and is in a language that they don’t understand.

START THINKING GUYS, I NEED ALL THE HELP AND ADVICE I CAN GET ON THIS ONE!!!

In the meantime...

Ganatantra din Mubarak.

Love.

We are just about to leave from Ahmedabad after a very warm and loving reception here. Thank you so much folks. Such warmth and love! We are all really overwhelmed! Thank you. Our sincere thanks for such a warm welcome. And we are so happy that you have loved our film so much.

Love.

Have been going through your responses post the CB controversy. Some sincere and some insincere. The insincere ones I choose to ignore, but I am very keen to respond to those of you have had very sincere queries, questions and even assumptions. I am very keen to present my side of the story, why I said what, why I feel what I feel, and what is the difference between a book and a screenplay, what I feel about ethics of this issue, fair play, morality etc. The whole gamut. I would also like to present some very interesting evidence.

However I would not like to do this right now.

The reason is, that first of all, I think that it is very important that we distance ourselves from this incident to be unemotional about it, me included. Only then will we be able to examine the merits of the case in an unbiased and clinical manner. I am a very emotional person and find it very difficult to be clinical, so for me distance is most important.

Another reason is that I would not like any more undue publicity for or against anyone. A few responses have expressed that maybe this is a controversy that we have cooked up to get publicity for the film. This stance of mine should satisfy them too.

The facts are before us in any case, and examining them now or after a few weeks should yield the same results.

A few of you have expressed extremely strong negative views about me, some may be insincere, but a few may be sincere too. I would like to give value to that. And hence I will try my best to satisfy you, or alternately, learn from you.

Some of you have expressed doubts about my actions, raised questions. I would like to give value to that. Hence I will try my best to answer all your queries and address all your doubts. I hope to satisfy you, or learn from your questions.

A lot of you have stood by me in full support. I thank you for trusting me. And you can be sure that I will not let you down. xox

In the mean time I have some very shocking news!!!

Don’t worry the news is good. But it is shocking nevertheless.

Last year GHAJINI had broken all records and had gone on to become the biggest grosser in the history of Indian Cinema. No film since has even come close to the business. In fact very few films even before GHAJINI are close, just a handful. Examples Gaddar, Hum Aapke Kaun, DDLJ, Raja Hindustani.

Now hold your breath, and take a seat.

3i has already crossed the business of GHAJINI even as you read this post!!!

In less than 10 days 3i has overtaken the ENTIRE business of GHAJINI!!!

India, Overseas, everywhere!!!

And is still going strong...

I have no idea how to describe what is happening. Some suggestions and explanations, PLEASE.

I cannot tell you how happy the entire team is. I am not a numbers person, numbers don’t mean anything to me except that they act as a yard stick to tell me how much the film has been seen and loved. We are so thrilled that all the love, effort and passion that we have put into making this film has been received with as much love and passion by all of you.

Fully overwhelmed and totally humbled. Just feel like holding this moment for ever.

Thank you.

Love.

x

Just landed in Kolkata after a super time in Bangalore.

The 3i team is travelling to a number of cities to interact with audiences across the country. Bangalore was the first stop and we had such a lovely time there. The entire team joins me in thanking Bangalore, and all of you who were there at the mall, to give us so much love and affection. It was really overwhelming. Thank you.

The sad note in our happiness was the untimely demise the next day of super star Vishnuvardhan. Mr Vishnuvardhan who is a huge star in Karnataka and has had a prolific career was only 59. Our condolences to his family, to all those who love him, and to all of Karnatka for whom he is such an icon. May his soul rest in peace.

We have now reached Kolkatta and we are all looking forward to meeting our audience here. Kolkata has always been a place I have loved and I am very happy to be back.

One word of caution to all those who come to meet and see us at the venue, please be careful not to hurt yourselves. I always worry that some kid will get trampled in the chaos. There are ladies, girls, kids and elderly people in the crowd, and I would not ever like it to become a mob situation or a stampede where someone gets hurt. I know that everyone gets excited and we love that, but in all the excitement I don’t want anyone to get hurt. Please be rest assured that we have come to see you, and are there for you, and please be relaxed about it.

Today of course is the last day of the year, it’s been a very good year for me and I am very grateful for that. I want to thank each and every one of you for the wonderful things that you have said about the film. Raju, Vinod and the entire team have been reading my blog and are very moved, and join me in thanking you. My sincere good wishes to all of us for a great new year ahead. Have a blast.

Lots of love.

x

 So?

What did y'all think?

Varanasi was truly enriching. And such wonderful people. So warm and helpful to a ‘complete stranger’. Each and everyone of them went out of their way to help a very ‘strange looking elderly man’. I made 5 new friends there. Ram Lakhan, Nawab Sahab, Lallan Miyan, Hasan and Javed.

My mother is from Varanasi hence the ref in my first clue ‘maa ke aangan mein raat bitaoon’. Most people thought I would turn up in Pune where my mother currently lives. But of course I am more cryptic than that. Warning. This is not some corny, easy to guess, filmy quiz where we just want to collect scores of winners. This is a genuinely tough contest and I don’t plan to make it easy. Well there are a few really easy ones as well. In fact, quite honestly, the Varanasi clue I consider fairly easy. Anyone who bothered to find out about my mother would have guessed.

When I set off to search for the house that my mother lived in I never thought I would actually find it. I had a very sketchy address and my mother’s memory of the place when she was 10 years old. And of course some very determined helpers.

I am most indebted to the the 5 of them. And as you guys may have noticed I presented them with a specially designed ring which is a symbol of my friendship. On this trip whenever I meet someone who I connect with I will offer him my ring. Which, by the way, also automatically gives him/her entry to the premier on the 23rd.

Have always been a big fan of Phantom, the ghost who walks. :-)

I have to say that I was very nervous at first. Would my disguise work? There was no way to tell until I walked onto the streets. Super exciting and great fun. Its been so long since I have not been stared at wherever I go. I could actually walk among people and no one gave me a second glance.

Well I am underground again. And will emerge next in the dark of the night.

Andheri kaali raat mein aaoonga main
khooni darwaza khatkhataoonga main
aap mujhe tak pahonch na paye to kya hua
kahin par apni chap chod jaoonga main.

Catch me if you can :-)

www.idiotsacademy.com

I am somewhere in the heart of India as I write this. Have just finished my dinner of masala dosa while watching Sachin on TV, provide the clue to my first sighting. I am staying in a small hotel. Outside a loudspeaker threatens to keep me awake all night. Though I doubt I am going to fall asleep anyway. This is a most exciting journey for me. To roam the length and breath of India without being caught.

I’m going to leave clues, 7 clues- 7 answers.

A lot of people are asking, and the answer is, yes. I have disappeared for real.

In case you are wondering why I am going underground when I should be on TV giving interviews, then read the synopsis.

And besides, I will have a lot more to say after what, I would imagine, will be a most enriching journey.

On this journey I am looking forward to meeting new people, making new friends and experiencing my country like I have never before.

ARG –alternate reality gaming. Am so happy and proud of my writer-director Anusha Rizvi. The film she has made, PEEPLI LIVE, has been selected at the Sundance Film Festival, in the competition section. This is quite an achievement as Sundance is a festival which is extremely selective about which films it accepts. In fact, if I am not mistaken, it is the first Indian feature film to make it to the competition section there.

Incidentally, this is the same film that a section of the media has been erroneously reporting as being about farmer suicides. It’s not about farmer suicides. It has also been reported that the film is called Falling. Both errors.

PEEPLI LIVE, is a satire, a black comedy about rural life in India. Except for Raghuvir Yadav, most of the actors are facing the camera for the first time, so a predominantly new cast, many of them of Adivasi origin from Madhya Pradesh. And what performances! I have been acting for 20 years and there was so much that I learnt from watching them.

I haven’t spoken about the film before as I like to be sure about how the film has turned out before I speak about it. Am rather happy with the way the film has turned out. Am looking forward to see what kind of response it gets at Sundance.

Fingers crossed.

One day I will be able to organise a chat that way I imagine. Hasn’t happened yet, but we’ll get there. The big challenge is to be able to take the volume of traffic. By the time we finished with the lobby and I tried to enter my chat room, I discovered to my horror that I COULDN’T. TOO MUCH TRAFIC I WAS TOLD. So the tech team had to quickly create a new chat room for me. Well, I can tell you that the 3i cast and crew had a super time, and we were very happy and blessed to have in our midst the parents of Shantanu and Swanand.

I’m sitting at my window sipping tea and watching the rain. Sigh... what a day. Wish Kiran was here with me... but she is working on her film in Panchgani. Feel like singing that song from Roti Kapda Aur Makan in which Zeenat Aman sings to Manoj Kumar. The situation is that it begins to rain and Manoj Kumar has to leave for work, to which Zeenat Aman sings : Hai hai yeh majboori, yeh mausam aur yeh doori, mujhe pal pal hai tadpaye, teri do takiya ki naukri mein mera lakhon ka sawan jaye. Losely translated it means - Oh no, what helplessness, this season and us apart(!), every moment I am tortured (by the fact, that), because of your 2 cent worth job we are losing this rain worth millions. Ashu?

Hey! Thats a super status for my fb page!!! Ha ha.

In 3i too we have this rain moment in the romantic song. In fact, apart from being a moment in the film for Pia and Rancho it is also pays a tribute to old Hindi films... and one Hollywood film... Titanic :-) . Which is actually a Hindi film shot in English. :-)

That song is going to be released tomorrow in fact. So catch it on the news, and youtube I suppose.

Back to my singing now.

Hai hai yeh majboori...

Cheers.

Official Aamir Blog
Hello everyone, thank you for your good wishes on Kiran’s birthday. The kids and I are here in Panchgani to spend the weekend with her. She has gone into hibernation here to work on the edit of her film.

Have logged in to make an important announcement. We are launching the music of 3i on the 9th of November, but for the first time this is happening on the net.

Venue: www.idiotsacademy.com , date:9th Nov, time:11am (India time).

So the plan is to release the music at 11am, and then all of us are in private chat rooms with you for an hour. When I say all of us I mean Vinod Chopra, Raju Hirani, Kareena, Maddy, Sharman, Boman, the music director Shantanu, the lyricist Swanand, the singers Shaan, Shreya, Suraj, and me.

The chat is going to be a video chat as well and not only text. And it is designed kind of like how my chat room is.

So spread the word, and log on to www.idiotsacademy.com before 11am.

See you there.

:-)

So finally the moment has arrived. Today the 1st look of 3i is to be launched. The first trailer of the film will be screened in Cinemas all across.

A strange calm has descended over me, the butterflies seem to be drugged. Maybe they are in a daze, suffocated by the toxic haze of smoke from a cigarette............. hopes Praveer.

But no! In fact they have been quelled by the steely resolve and an iron determination of the man who calls himself the Pucca Idiott.

Yes folks it is me on face book. Pucca Idiott was a secret identity I was using but unfortunately Star News ne mera bhanda phod diya.

Purpose of being anonymous was that anyone I interact with treats me like a normal guy. No extra fuss etc. Also I get to know what everyone is really thinking and feeling. Sometimes you might not share everything with me, or might not be totally frank with me, if you know who I am.

So this anonymous person I had built with so much effort will have to step aside now. Sigh, was having so much fun prowling about.

Anyway back to the first look. Tomorrow, or rather today, is the 1st step. Fingers crossed. Its a 90 seconder with a 60 second version which will hit TV on 1st Nov. Hope you guys like it. Tell me, I’ll be waiting.

Hey you know what, I think I'll put it up here as well. Will get to work on that.

x

Or click here to download video

Hey folks, one more year passes and as the new year approaches I would like to wish everyone a very happy Diwali and a prosperous new year.

I know I have been away for a bit. The last one week has been very busy with 3i work. The final song is done and now the cut is locked too. I think we have managed to make the film that we set out to. In the coming weeks I will tell you more about the film and what is happening.

As you can well imagine the good old butterflies have begun to spread their wings once again and their feathery touch has started to tickle my insides.

Am tempted to try and snuff them out with smoke from a fresh B&H, but I won’t. I think this time I have quit for good. So please ignore media reports about me smoking.

Lots of love.

x

Had to hit the road running as soon as I got back, which is why I have disappeared.

Deadlines. Deadlines. Deadlines. Deadlines everyday. All for that one big deadline of 25th Dec.

Also we were having test screenings of 3i before Raju locked the cut. Test screening take a fair amount of time, running time of the film plus 2 to 3 hrs of discussions. That stage is complete now and I think we have a film.

Currently the shoot for the last song is on so I guess I should try and get in a few hours of rest. Just popped in to say hi.

Catch you later.

Much love.

Kiran and I saw what we thought was one of the funniest films we have seen in our lives. Its called Withnail And I. It is the most wacked out and bizarrely funny film I have ever seen.

Warning. I’m not sure I should recommend it though. I am not sure how many people will find this kind of humour appealing. I believe it wasn’t very successful at the box office when it released, so judging by that not many in the public liked it. But for those who want to experiment with very unusual humour in cinema, go for it.

Its a story about these 2 out of work actors and their mad, funny and tragic lives. Exceedingly well written, brilliantly performed and superbly executed. Its a huge cult success. Written and directed by Bruce Robinson. British.

Watching Withnail And I reminded me of one of my favourite books, A Confederacy Of Dunces, written by John Kennedy Toole. Again a piece of work that I find supremely funny and tragic. Absolutely brilliant. A must read, but again I don’t know how many of you will like it. Have read the book twice and plan to read it once every couple years.

The book was actually published after the death of the author and he did not live to see the huge success that it became. In fact the book would never have been published had it not been for Toole’s mother who found a carbon copy of the manuscript left in the house following Toole’s suicide in 1969 at the young age of 31. Toole’s mother took this manuscript to various publishers in attempt to get it published without any success until she took it to Walker Percy, an author, and literally forced him to read it. Percy explains in his foreword that he started the manuscript with great reservation but got sucked into the book and loved it. The book was published in 1980, 11 years after Toole’s death, and became a cult classic, and then later a mainstream success.

So much brilliance in this world. So inspiring.

What fun.

Just saw Shawshank Redemption. Had heard so much about this film. It seems to be on a lot of ‘must see’ lists. Really enjoyed it and loved Robbins’ performance and the way his character was written.

Gosh there are so many films to see, and books to read. One life time is not enough. Books, I read, but films I never get down to seeing. Strange, since, I love cinema so much. It’s not as if I don’t enjoying watching films, I really do, in fact when I watch a film I forget to blink and my eyes start hurting after a while. And I am an ideal audience, always ready to be manupilated, (listening Mira?). But for someone who is so steeped in films I have watched pathetically few films in all these years. Have I said all this before? Can’t remember. Anyway, lot of catching up to do I guess.

So Kiran and I are away from home, in one very quiet spot, just lying in and resting. Reading, going for walks, watching films.

Vinod and Raju tell me that the post production on 3 Idiots is progressing well, so by the time I get back the cut will be ready. Which means I can confirm to all those of you who have been repeatedly asking... yes 3i will be releasing on Christmas this year. I’ll see the cut once I get back. Will keep y’all posted.

x

Just saw 'QUICK GUN MURUGAN'. Really enjoyed it. I think fans of the Channel 'V' character Quick Gun Murugan will love it. Its got so many rib cracking moments. And a very well pitched performance by the lead actor Dr Rajendra Prasad, and all the other cast. Its releasing on 28th so dont miss it if you are a Quick Gun fan.

Mind it.

 I have bad news folks.

Kiran and I lost our baby.

Despite our best efforts we were unable to avert a miscarriage.

The last 2 months have been a struggle for us and that is one of the reasons I was absent from the blog in more ways than one.

K and I need time to heal.

I will be away for a while.

Love.

Last few days I’ve been watching on the news all about the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. Such an exciting thought. To actually get into a rocket, shoot off into space, watch the earth receding, and the moon getting closer, and then actually land on it and walk about. Wow.

But did it actually happen or was it all a hoax? Trick photography and creative filming, or real footage and photographs?

Have heard so much about the conspiracy theory that surrounds the moon landing. So I decided to do a basic search on youtube to see if there is anything posted there. Of course there is, both for and against. While going through some clips I ran into this most interesting documentary. Its called ‘Moon Landing A Fake or Fact?’, at least that what you need to type. Try and watch it, its in 9 or 10 parts. Then I want you guys to tell me what you think, did it actually happen or was it the biggest con of the century?

I see there has been quite a discussion on what I wore to my event with Secretary Clinton. Actually I didn’t think much about it. I don’t usually give much importance what I am wearing, so I’ll stay away from that discussion. But what I would like to say is that it was a real pleasure to meet with her. I found Sec Clinton to be an extremely warm and charming person. And she has such sharp and clear thinking, and expresses herself so well. Quite a privilege to meet with her.

And yes the cat is finally out of the bag. I am playing one of the leads in Kiran’s film Dhobi Ghat. The reason we kept this under wraps is that she didn’t want to attract much attention towards her film. She wanted to make this film on real locations with a tiny crew, very guerilla style. So we had to do it very quietly. And for once we managed to keep a secret from the media, at least until we finished the shoot. Actually I think I spoke about it in an interview right after we finished the shoot, so I'm surprised people are reacting now.

And lastly, principal photography on 3 Idiots is complete! We have one song left which Raju wants to shoot in Sept. Yesterday he began work on the post in full swing. Good God I'm getting butterflies in my stomach already. But this time I will NOT smoke. No matter how nervous I get.

omigod... help.
