Federer finally wins the French Open. Am so happy for him. Sampras says he is the best ever tennis player in history. I’m not sure if there is such a thing. Quite frankly each of the leading players of their time were equally difficult to beat. Borg, Sampras himself, not to mention Laver. But he is certainly the only one to cry like a baby each times he wins a final!!! Thats one thing I share in common with him. I cry like hell each time any of my films do well, but I also cry when they don't, so...

So is there any way that we can play scrabble on the net. I believe there is. Wouldn’t mind that at all. I should try and work all of this on this site itself. I mean what if like the chat (which doesn’t work so well right now) we could actually play some games live on this site? Maybe even chess, haan Praveer? I should get my team to work on it. Like maybe 4 of us can play Scrabble, while anyone who wants to watch… can, …stuff like that. In fact we could make this space a kind of hangout where there is a lot more choice to do other stuff. Hmmm… lets see.

Well all good things must come to an end and I am back to work from tomorrow. Actual shooting work, though, starts around the 15th of June, and I have to confess that these last 2 months I have missed the other Idiots.

Have played quite a few board games these past few weeks. Have you guys tried Settlers Of Catan? I think that’s my top favorite. Followed by Age Of Empires, Carrcassonne and Scotland Yard. These are all group games needing 4 to 6 players. Good fun. Would love your suggestions on board games you think I should try.

Most disturbing to hear about racist attacks on Indians living in Australia. Quite a shame. While this doesn’t mean that all Australians are racists, the frequency and seriousness of such attacks, I think, calls for an extra ordinary reaction from the Australian authorities. And while we want action to be taken by authorities in Australia, equally we should remember all the various crimes against foreigners who visit India.
Let us hope and pray that Shravan recovers soon.

I see that Glen my skiing instructor has joined us. Well Glen if you are reading this you need to corroborate all my skiing achievements. Nobody here seems to believe that I was doing Black slopes on Day 4. Actually I suspect it was Day 3.

Well I'm back folks.

Hello hello hello. :-)

Hello folks. Have been away for around a month, which is about the half way mark of my holiday, and I was missing y’all so a quick hello.

Guys, those of you who have the resources and ability to try out skiing please do so, it is absolutely one of the best things I have done in a long time. Thanks to my persistent kids I ended up committing to a week of skiing, and boy am I glad I did. We were in Banff, a popular ski resort in Canada, a very warm and friendly place and great for skiing. Lovely slopes, very good facilities and great instructors. My kids have been there twice before, first time for me. I had a great instructor, Glen, who had me doing ‘black’ slopes on day 4!!!

You have the ‘bunny’ slope for total beginners, then the ‘green’ slopes which are easy, ‘blue’ slopes which are intermediate level, ‘black’ which are difficult, and then this one slope/cliff called the ‘delirium dive’ which is for people with suicidal tendencies.

So black in 4 days as you might have figured by now is quite impressive. Well what can I say….

But seriously folks please try skiing if you can. It is one of the most challenging and exhilarating sports. Pure delirium as you rush down cutting through the ice cold air in the middle of the most stunning natural beauty, the feeling of adventure as you go down slopes which test your courage, and above all the humility you feel as you untangle your various limbs and skis trying to get back on your feet after a fall.

Speaking of humbling experiences I remember many years back I went to Disneyland with my kids when they were quite small. There roaming about in the theme parks were the characters of Mickey Mouse and Minny Mouse, with loads of children queuing up with their respective parents for an autograph and a photo with their favorite cartoon character. My kids went nuts and insisted on a photo and autograph with them. So here I was, big superstar, standing quietly in line waiting for Mickey Mouse to give me an autograph for my children. And as I was mouthing the lines that I hear everyday - “Hi, my kids are big fans, can we have a picture please?” – I was thinking to myself what fun if the person behind the Mickey Mouse costume is a desi!!!

Well, once again my kids and I were in Orlando visiting the various theme parks. This time thankfully my kids have grown older so I was spared the humbling experience. One per trip is enough.

So skiing, then roller coaster rides, theme rides, water parks, and then a week in Bristol spent recovering from the skiing and theme parks. Very close friends of ours live in Bristol and they have just given birth to a pair of beautiful twin girls.

And of course my whirlwind trip to Berlin where I was most happy, no thrilled, to see some of the blog gang. I was so wishing I had more time to spend with those of you who were there. Really, it was too short the trip. But it was also something quite sudden and unplanned. Being such a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn I just had to accept the invitation and I am so happy I did. Got to meet all my fans in Berlin, especially the bloggers. Thanks for being there guys. Much love.

So having a great time so far and thoroughly enjoying myself and my children. Today also being Ira's birthday so let me get back to her.

Cheers.

x

Finally! I am on holiday with my children. After two years of working pretty much 24/7. Unfortunately Kiran is not with us as she is busy with her film.

So I’m going to go off the map for the next two months folks. I think I needed a break in any case, as I was kind of not really there last couple months, if you know what I mean. So I will see you now in June. Or end May. Unless I start turkeying in which case I’ll drop a line. And once I"m back rested from my holiday I'll be much more connected. x

To all Indians, remember to vote, and make an informed choice. Meaning, check out all the candidates from your area before you decide who to vote for.

Also, you probably have heard by now that all film producers and distributors have decided not to release any films in any Indian national multiplex chains until we get fair terms, and they stop bullying us, and they stop all irregularities. So please bear with us.

Cheers guys.

Love.

x

 Hello hello hello.

My God where have y’all been?! Disappearing for ages, posting really short comments. Not good. Chalo I’ll forgive you.

Last evening folks K and I were treated to the most amazing experience in a long time. We were Lang Langed.

Lang Lang is among the most outstanding musicians I have heard in my life. He becomes the paino that he is playing, and then the music comes out of him. That’s the best way I can describe his playing. Its truly an experience watching him play. Beats me how so much sound can come out of just two hands.

And Zubin Mehta too, thought he doesn’t play but conducts, when you are watching him you feel the music is coming out of him. Absolutely amazing.

As you might have guessed we were at the Homi Bhabha Auditorium last evening listening to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

What I missed though was the batting display of Sehwag. I believe he was awesome. He really took the opposition to the cleaners. I liked the way the New Zealand captain described it. “It was nothing but a good old-fashioned hiding.”

Well, I’m glad to be back.

Love.

x

I am sitting in my room in IIMB waiting to be called for my shot. First my apologies for being away for so long. I hope to be more in touch in the coming weeks. As y’all can well imagine the past couple months have been a mad time.

My sincere and heartfelt thank you for the responses y’all have sent for Ghajini. I am so happy that the film has gone down so well with audiences. I am thrilled with the big opening that the film got and the kind of history it creating at the box office. I am touched and deeply moved by the faith you have shown in me. Thank you.

You know one of the reasons I wasn’t posting much on my blog before the release and soon after was that I was so immersed in Ghajini, and most of what I felt like sharing with you at that time was to do with Ghajini. However I was very conscious of the fact that it should not appear as if I am trying to use my blog to publicize the film. The sad thing about that is, that then, I don’t end up sharing with you a lot of the process and what I am feeling at that time. Films are my life and I would like to share it first hand, and when it is happening. So I think henceforth I am not going to bother about that.

I have to say I am having a great time shooting here at IIM Bangalore. Since I am also staying on the campus I save on travel time and as a result I am finally getting to sleep. I can’t tell you how happy I am about that. Raju is an absolute delight to work with and so are the rest of the cast and crew. I’m also really enjoying playing badminton, tennis and chess with the students here. IIMB has a super campus and a great bunch of students and faculty. Importantly everyone seems to be happy here and that is good to see.

But mostly I am enjoying catching up on my sleep. What fun.

Would like to meet some of you who live here in Bangalore. So post me your contact details if you are up to it and I’ll try and work it out.

I’m reading a great book. Its called India After Gandhi, by Ramchandra Guha. It is a book on Indian History post 1947. Very informative.

Ghajini is finally releasing as per schedule on 25th Dec, and some theatres are having paid previews this evening.

The last 24 hours have been most traumatic. In fact yesterday I had written a post which I was just about to uplink when I heard about the problem, and then I didn't post it. Am putting it below. Am emotionally totally drained. Just going to wait for your response now.

_____

Prenatal Depression.

Just before any of my films release I go into pendulum mode. One sec I feel very optimistic about the film and the next I’m sure no one’s going to like it. I lose my smile my appetite, my sleep. On the whole I am listless and walk around like a zombie. VVC (Vidhu Vinod Chopra), who was talking to me yesterday, accurately described it as Prenatal Depression. The film is about to be delivered and will be out of our systems so to speak. Then it will have a life of its own which we have absolutely no control over.

Sigh. It too tough, making films.

All the 2 years of planning, preparation, creative discussions, the struggle to shoot the film and the sleepless nights of post production ultimately culminate in a 3 hour experience in the darkness of a cinema hall.

This time around it is a remake of a Tamil film so I am especially anxious. Ghajini was a huge success in the South and Surya had done an excellent job in the original. I hope that I have been able to do justice to the film. Am especially awaiting Surya’s response as he was the one who went out of his way to convince me that I suit the role.

Am guilty of not being able to read the responses for my last post this time around, as I have been just too busy. In fact the last couple weeks have been too hectic and as a result of the exhaustion and excitement I’m down with fever so am lying in bed as I write this.
While the film releases on the 25th all over I believe in some Cinemas it actually opens for Paid Previews on the evening of 24th. So I will be eagerly awaiting your response 24th evening onwards. Wont miss a single post.

At this time, irrespective of the fate of the film, I want to acknowledge and introduce to you the various people who have worked behind the scenes on this film. The presenter Arvind Garu, who has been a great support to the entire team and has had complete faith in Murgadoss and his abilities. Also a man of great wisdom and maturity. Both Tagore Madhu and Madhu Mantena who have worked tirelessly to bring the film onto screen in the best possible way. Each with their individual strengths have been the best producers that this film could have ever asked for or got. Ravi K Chandran who has taken the film to another level with his visual excellence. Rasul who has impressed me the most with his amazing sound design. He has been among the most committed technicians I have ever worked with. The kind of detail and layering I have seen him get into is truly heartwarming, and the pains he has taken to satisfy the director are inspiring for any film person. Anthony who has truly astounded me with his editing abilities and has been a learning experience to work with. Peter Hines who has shocked me with his mad energy and acute understanding of the character and situation when he is composing for action. Stunt Shiva, who stepped in when Peter was unable to be with us because of the change in schedule because of my injury, worked with an enthusiasm unseen in clash work. Sunil, who quietly and tirelessly went about his work in Production Design to give the film the unique look that it requires. Arjun and Avan who has never failed to satisfy me in my endeavor to look the character. Rahul Nanda, who has managed to capture the pain and romance of the film in one single image. Anup Dev, who has patiently and with a lot of care given the final touches to the film. Piyush Misra, who handled the tough job of adapting the dialogues into Hindi. Nabeel Abbas, whose advice into the promotions and marketing of the film as a consultant were extremely helpful. Shilpa and Prabhat, who are extremely insightful and acute with their expertise in promotion have taken the film to the heights that it deserves. Priti and Aman, whose marketing abilities have given the film the scale and depth that it deserves. And lastly and most importantly Murugadoss. To make a film is very difficult, to make a film which connects with the audience is even more difficult, and to REMAKE a film which has connected big time with an audience with the same enthusiasm is most rare. Working with fresh enthusiasm, crystal clear thinking and an almost childlike excitement Murugadoss has breathed like into the film. He is an absolute pleasure and privilege to work with. How much I have learnt from him.

At the risk of sounding very presumptuous and patronizing I humbly thank all of you for the great time you gave me.

And now the time to test the pudding has arrived.

Cheers.

I am here in Chennai to meet Shridhar for the last time. Went to his house last night to meet his family who are in shock and grief. As he lay in the centre of the gathering he looked peaceful, almost as if he were just asleep. I met his parents, brothers, wife and sons who were all very dignified in their moment of deep pain.

Shridhar was one of the finest technicians of our industry and a dear friend. We have worked together a number of times, and very closely during Lagaan. He did the final mix of the film, which is the last and most crucial creative process in film making. A close associate of A.R., he has worked together with him on a majority of his songs and background scores. In fact he was in A.R.’s studio until 4am yesterday morning working with A.R. and Murgadoss on our film. By around 8.30am he had passed away in his sleep.

The sudden news of his most untimely death came to me yesterday morning when I was still trying to pull myself out of the depressive state of mind I had slid into post the attacks on Mumbai. It left me shattered.

As I had expected various politicians have tried to use this traumatic and tragic attack to their advantage. I only hope that people see through them this time.

Quite clearly both the major political parties have failed to tackle terrorism. There have been repeated attacks on us during both their reigns which neither has been able to either anticipate or deal with well. While what happened in Mumbai recently clearly exposes the incompetence of the Congress, the hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight 814 during the BJP rule shows them in even worse light. They actually NEGOTIATED with the terrorists and RELEASED 3 dreaded terrorists from Indian jails. All the 5 hijackers and the 3 terrorists released from India by the then BJP government were allowed to escape to attack us another day.

I think the first lesson to learn from this is that we MUST NOT NEGOTIATE. No matter what, the next time round around, and lets not fool ourselves we must be alert and prepared for more attacks, we MUST NOT NEGOTIATE. All potential terrorists must get a very clear message that INDIA DOES NOT NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS. What that means is, that in the future if there is a situation where me or my kids are held hostage by a bunch of terrorists then I must be prepared to tell our government - to hell with me and my children just go in there and kill the terrorists. I am prepared to sacrifice myself and my loved ones for the larger safety and security of the country but DO NOT LISTEN TO AND NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS.

I personally hold both these political parties, and in fact other regional political parties across the country, responsible in one way or the other, for fueling terrorism in the first place. And please remember that the definition of terrorism is not restricted to AK 47 toting maniacs. It includes the spread of terror by other means like stone throwing, beating up of innocent people on the roads, and rioting, etc. Any means, in fact, to spread terror in the hearts of ordinary citizens.

The other important thing we need to remind ourselves in this time of anger and hurt is to stay calm and take sensible steps, and not give in to thoughtless knee jerk reactions. I heard someone say on television that we should all stop paying our taxes as a show of protest. Haven’t heard of a more silly idea than that. If we stop paying our taxes then we won’t have an army and NSG to save us next time around!!! Instead we should all START PAYING OUR TAXES. We demand so much of our leaders but are we fulfilling our basic responsibility? Can we say with honesty that as citizens of our country we are all honestly paying our taxes? If we are not paying our taxes can we blame the government for being inefficient? If we are corrupt then how can we expect our politicians to be honest?

I have a very important thing to say to all the various people going around arbitrarily throwing accusations at the politicians. These politicians are not from Jupiter or Mars, they are one of us, from our very own society, selected by us through a democratic process. So now think for a moment, who really is to blame? We can only blame ourselves guys. Half of us don’t go to vote. The half that does vote has selected these guys.

In my opinion, you really want to change things? Change yourself. Each one of us needs to take a very honest look inwards and rectify and work on what we think is wrong with us. If each one of us does that individually then there will be a sea change in our society at large. I have to promise myself that I will not be corrupt, will play my role in society with honesty and sincerity. Doctors, lawyers, judges, people in the IAS, police force, media persons, businessmen, job workers, labour force, everyone. We have to stop thinking of our own individual gain and loss and do what is honest, true and right, and think collective. It calls for personal sacrifice in this time of chaos but from chaos will emerge clarity. Even if we don’t manage to achieve this for ourselves we will achieve it for our children.

What I would really like to see emerge from all this is the youth of this country starting a political party. A group that stands for strong, clean, honest and fresh leadership. A group that we can all support.

And finally, if we really want to make sure that terrorists fail in achieving their end, then these terror attacks should not take us towards hate but instead towards love. If we react with hate we are succumbing to these terror attacks, and if we react with increasing love and peace in our hearts then we squarely defeat the terrorists. Allowing love, peace and trust to grow within us is not a sign of weakness but a sign of immense strength.

With appreciation and gratitude to the security forces who acted with courage, and with a prayer in my heart for those departed.

Faith.

Have been watching television since yesterday and to see various locations in Mumbai turned into a war zone is shocking and heart breaking to say the least.

My heartfelt condolences to the families of persons killed and taken hostage. I was feeling sick in the stomach when the fire broke out at the Taj. What would the people caught inside be going through. The fire fighters were doing their best but my imagination was running wild and I was feeling helpless watching other people trapped in the rooms adjoining the fire.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of the brave officers of the Mumbai Police who lost their lives leading from the front to take on these terrorists. Especially Hemant Karkare of the ATS who in the recent past was being targeted by various political parties for the work that he was doing. When will these politicians realize and admit that terrorists HAVE NO RELIGION. Terrorists are not Hindu or Muslim or Christian. They are not people of religion or God. They are people who have gone totally sick in their head and have to be dealt with in that manner. Hemant Karkare is an example of a brave officer who gave his life in the line of duty.

At this moment I pray that the brave officers of the Mumbai Police, the Indian Army, Navy, the NSG and the various other security forces dealing with the situation are able to end this crisis as soon as possible.

If it had just been a matter of simply fighting the terrorists the security forces would have dealt with it sooner, but here of course the situation is extremely complicated with many innocent lives at stake. The fact that the locations are huge hotels with multiple floors, hundreds of rooms, many corridors, staff quarters, work spaces, entries, exits etc, and have innocent guests still in there, have made the task very difficult and delicate.

I dread to think of how various political parties are now going to try and use this tragedy to further their political careers. At least now they should learn to not divide people and instead become responsible leaders. An incident such as this really exposes how ill-equipped we are as a society as far as proper leaders go. We desperately need young, dynamic, honest, intelligent and upright leaders, who actually care for the country.

Faith.

Jai Hind.

On my way back to Bombay. L.A. was good but it''s always so good to head back home. I''m one of those people who gets homesick really fast, especially when I am traveling outside of India. Within a week I lose my humour, after two I start getting depressed and by the end of the third week I start weeping when I see soppy television ads.

Speaking of television I get so attracted to these ads on US TV selling the most unusual stuff on tele-shopping. Its amazing how I am such a sucker for all the most inane products which finally I’ll probably never use. Thankfully better sense prevails just before I place the order. Like this time I saw this ad for an amazing absorbing material. It looks like a piece of cloth but is made of some magic material which just soaks up any liquid which may have spilled. Every time that ad came on I was riveted. Took down the number to call and everything but I realised that my trip was too short for the order to reach me. Then there was this amazing pull-ups bar which fits on to any doorway and is great for a workout without going to a gym. And then there was this ad for Timeless Romantic Tunes played on the piano by this pianist called Beegie Adair. It sounded so good, and its Kiran''s birthday on the 7th so I thought it would make a great gift. But it would never have reached me on time. Well it''s the thought that counts, so K should be happy.

In the meantime Obama has won. My congratulations to the people of the US, this is their victory as much as Obama''s. Well now his work really begins, time for him to fulfil all his promises. Quite a soap opera though.

My flight beckons.

Cheers.

29th was the screening of TZP in Seattle for the IDA (International Dyslexia Association). There were about 200 members, mostly American I think, and I was curious to see the response of a non Indian audience to what we had made.

First of all, it was not in a cinema hall but in a conference room so the acoustics were not good, and it was a DVD projection. Carlos, the projectionist, was really sweet and had done his best in the circumstances. As the lights dimmed I was really nervous. Here were people who know all about Dyslexia and work in the field of learning disabilities. Also, whenever I watch my work around 6 months after it has released I usually hate it, and this time was no different. As the film played out I kept squirming, wishing I could disappear into my seat.

And then finally the film got over and the lights came on….. to an ABSOLUTELY THUNDEROUS STANDING OVATION!!!

My God it was so moving. I was so overwhelmed. Then I came forward for the Q&A and saw the tears streaming down the cheeks of the audience. I can’t tell you how happy I was to see so many people cry! Needless to say I was part of them, I cry at the drop of a hat. And here were people from all over the world who had dedicated their lives to helping children with learning difficulties. I was so glad that IDA had chosen to screen TZP at their annual conference, and that I was able to make it to Seattle. And I felt so blessed to be part of a film that touches people so deeply.

Everyone just loved the film and it had struck a really deep chord. In fact the reaction was exactly as it had been with audiences back home in India. It really amazes me how people from all across the world react to some films in pretty much the same way, which reaffirms the fact of how similar we all are no matter which part of the globe we come from.

Darsheel struck once again and won all hearts. The story and screenplay were unanimously appreciated as were all the other aspects of the film. The music and songs were especially loved and everyone wanted to know more about Shankar, Ehsan, Loy and Prasoon.

All of them wanted to know when the film would release in theatres in the US. On being told that the film has already been released here they all insisted that the film be re-released in the US in theatres, this time for the mainstream American audience. One of the interesting points which came out of the Q&A was the request from the audience to dub the film into English when re-released here. They felt, and rightly so, that they wanted their children to see the film and were afraid that the smaller kids will not be able to read the subtitles. So I’m going to look into that. At the very least the DVD release here can incorporate a dubbed version as well.

Well, you can imagine that I didn’t get much sleep that night. So on the night of the 29th there was at least one person who was sleepless in Seattle, and this time it wasn’t Tom Hanks.
